Ian Wright delivers verdict on Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has suggested Alexandre Lacazette may be second-guessing himself when it comes to converting chances at the moment.

The star has unfortunately experienced a lacklustre 202o/21 so far, scoring just three goals in nine appearances.

The Frenchman has been criticised for his apparent lack of a cutting edge in front of goal which was again evident against Aston Villa on Sunday, and some fans have called for him to be benched in order to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang playing through the middle.

In the eyes of ex-Gunners hitman Wright, the 2017 signing from Lyon’s struggles are likely psychological.

He said on his podcast (quoted by Goal): “I saw some stats about Lacazette’s average position. For a focal point, he’s not near it.

“With the chance he had, for me, even with no one in the ground, you could see he’s going through that spell as a forward where he’s thinking about his next chance.

“He’s actually thinking about it. I’ve seen him do a couple of headers now where you can tell he’s thinking about it. He’s thinking about it.

“Where that ball came in, you don’t need to think about it, you just need to get it on target. Just control it.”

TBR’s View – Lacazette conundrum will be a test for Arteta

One gets the feeling that Arteta has really been giving Lacazette – who cost Arsenal just shy of £53 million all-in (BBC Sport) – a chance to nail down a starting spot

In games, Arteta can often be heard shouting instructions in French at the 29-year-old, and it just seems he really wants him to succeed.

But he’s undoubtedly struggling and so is the team, and one wonders how long it will be before the manager caves and sticks Aubameyang through the middle.

By taking Lacezette out though, there is a risk that his confidence could take a big hit.
