Ian Wright claims 24-year-old Tottenham player did not have a clue vs Arsenal
Ian Wright has claimed on his Wrighty’s House Podcast that Sergio Reguilon did not have a clue how to deal with Bukayo Saka at the weekend, and claimed that the Tottenham player is nowhere near the level he was at when he arrived.
What’s the story?
Spurs are continuing the inquest into what happened on Sunday. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were blown away by Arsenal at the Emirates.
If anything, the 3-1 scoreline flattered the visitors. And Tottenham now need to work out how they get themselves out of their current rut.
It certainly feels a long time ago that they were winning three games on the bounce and topping the table.
A number of their players have gone off the boil. And one of those Wright felt really struggled against the Gunners was Reguilon.
In fact, the pundit suggested that the left-back’s form has declined considerably since his arrival at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“When Reguilon came, I’m looking at him and I’m thinking, ‘Jesus Christ, Real Madrid you’ve got some players’,” he told Wrighty’s House. “But now I’m watching him, he looks nowhere near what he was and he did not have a clue what to do with Saka.”
Reguilon could be huge player for Tottenham – but form is a worry
In fairness, Reguilon did not make a bad start to the season. But he did endure a torrid time against Saka.
Much of the frustration surrounding the 24-year-old centres on the fact that Spurs fans have seen how good he can be.
As Wright suggests, he was excellent early on in his Tottenham spell. And he is clearly a huge talent with the potential to enjoy a superb career.
However, Spurs fans have not seen the best of the Spaniard anywhere near often enough.
He is one of several within Nuno’s squad with a major point to prove in the months ahead.
