Ian Wright bemoans Tanguy Ndombele not starting for Spurs
Ian Wright has hinted to Match of the Day that he would have handed Tanguy Ndombele a start for Spurs at Crystal Palace, insisting that they lacked his creativity at Selhurst Park.
Tottenham suffered their first league defeat under Nuno Espirito Santo. And it proved to be a hugely disappointing day for the side who started the day top of the table.
They were beaten 3-0 by the Eagles. All of the goals came late on for Patrick Vieira’s side.
Despite the floodgates only opening after the 76th minute, Spurs rarely looked like scoring themselves. In fact, Harry Kane failed to have a single shot during the contest.
And when asked about Spurs’ problems going forward, Wright appeared to suggest that he would have started Ndombele in that midfield.
“I thought they might have changed something when they went a goal down,” he told Match of the Day.
“But they started with Winks, Hojbjerg and Skipp in the midfield, no Ndombele, no creativity, I was thinking to myself where’s [Kane] going to get his chances from?”
Ndombele stock rises as Spurs toil at Crystal Palace
It is encouraging that Ndombele was named on the bench for Saturday. That appears to be progress from where he was over the summer.
But it is alarming that Nuno still saw little need to bring him on before Palace made the game safe.
Tottenham will be hoping to have the likes of Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn back as soon as possible.
So it will be interesting to see what Nuno’s plans for Ndombele are over the coming weeks.
Certainly, plenty of fans will not be happy if he is left on the bench again when Spurs need a goal in future.
