Ian Wright amazed by ‘brilliant’ £15m Tottenham player against Aston Villa

Ian Wright has lauded Pape Matar Sarr for one piece of ‘brilliant’ play during Tottenham Hotspur’s hugely impressive win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Spurs made a real statement in the race to make the top-four in the Premier League. Certainly, at half-time, few would have anticipated what was to come in the second-half.

Tottenham would score four times after the break, with four different players getting on the scoresheet. And the rout began with a moment of sheer genius from Pape Matar Sarr.

Sarr received the ball down the right flank and produced a stunning cross onto the edge of the six-yard box. The ball found itself between the centre-backs where James Maddison was waiting to stab his effort into the bottom corner.

Maddison will hardly have an easier finish this season. And with that, Ian Wright told Monday Night Football (broadcast on 11/3; 18:55), that the 21-year-old did superbly to put the opportunity on a plate for Maddison.

“Well, to be honest, the cross makes the finish,” he said.

“What I love about how James Maddison gets in there, he knows that this is coming. This ball is making it so all he’s got to do is get something on it. That ball scored that goal for me. It’s the kind of cross you want. You don’t have to do much apart from make sure that you get good contact. Brilliant cross.”

Six goal involvements this season

Sarr is not known for providing assists. That was only his fourth in 38 games for Tottenham. But clearly, he has the quality to make a real impact in the final third.

None of the central midfielders within the squad have been directly involved in more goals than Sarr, who has three goals and three assists in the top-flight this season.

Maddison clearly knew what quality he could provide as he showed no hesitation getting into that dangerous area. And Sarr obliged by finding his inner-David Beckham.

It was another reminder of how the £15 million deal for the Senegalese looks to be a real bargain.
