Ian McGarry claims Liverpool and rivals have ‘re-established’ interest in Ben White

Transfer expert Ian McGarry has told the Transfer Window podcast that both Liverpool and Manchester United have re-established interest in Brighton defender Ben White – after an impressive start to Premier League life.

White, 23, was relatively unknown when he joined Leeds in the summer of 2019. He played every game of their promotion-winning season, but the Whites could not tempt Brighton into letting him leave on a permanent basis.

Tipped for a future England cap, he was linked with Liverpool and United in the summer – only to then sign a new Brighton deal. White has since started all 12 games for Brighton, in numerous positions.

On the right of a back three, as part of a back four or in holding midfield, White is certainly showing enormous quality – and has a chance of an England call-up. McGarry says Liverpool and United are eyeing a January move.

“Manchester United and Liverpool have re-established interest, which they first established in the summer, in Brighton defender Ben White who has made a very, very impressive start to the season,” McGarry said.

“He is a young, English player, can play out from the back, can play in a three or a four. Brighton value him at anything £50million plus. Liverpool and Man United feel like they can do something in January.”

TBR’s view – A sensational signing for either club

Even if his asking price is astronomical, given he has only played 12 times in the Premier League throughout his career – and only 130 times at senior level for Leeds, Brighton, Newport and Peterborough.

White showed at Leeds that not only is he excellent on the ball – good enough to play in midfield – but is also solid in the air and will put his body on the line. It is rare that centre-backs, these days, are so well equipped in both areas.

Though £50million is expensive, his value increases every time he plays in the Premier League. Had he been playing for a bigger club than Brighton, his price tag would have already reached that mark. A no-brainer.
