'I wouldn't': Pundit says 'massively underrated' star shouldn't even consider joining Arsenal
Danny Mills has claimed that Everton and Arsenal are on par with each other at the moment and Dominic Calvert-Lewin shouldn’t even consider switching Merseyside for North London in January.
The Sun revealed earlier this week that Arsenal are looking to replace Alexandre Lacazette in the winter window. The Frenchman has entered the final year of his contract and January will be the Gunners’ last chance of making any money off his sale.
If Lacazette leaves, Arsenal will have to find a replacement. The report claims that Mikel Arteta and Edu have a couple of names in mind, and Everton star Calvert-Lewin, labelled as ‘massively underrated‘ by Troy Deeney, is one of them.
However, Mills believes the Englishman shouldn’t join the Gunners. He has claimed that comparing Rafa Benitez and Arteta’s pedigrees tells everyone that chances of success under the Everton boss are a lot higher than at the Emirates.
Mills: Calvert-Lewin shouldn’t join Arsenal
Asked about Clavert-Lewin leaving Everton for Arsenal, the former Liverpool man said on TalkSport: “I wouldn’t. Not right now, no.
“When you look at what Rafa Benitez has done, the two players he has brought in. You look at Rafa Benitez’s pedigree and Mikel Arteta’s pedigree, I know where I’m going. I know who I believe will get it right long term.
“Everton have got a lot of money, they are very well backed financially, possibly will move into a new stadium, sooner rather than later. I think Dominic Calvert-Lewin will thrive under Rafa Benitez and I think he’ll get even better.
“If he goes to Arsenal, not sure what’s going to happen. Have (Arsenal) really got more chance of winning a trophy? I would say Everton and Arsenal are on par for winning a trophy. There’s not an awful lot between them.”
Should DCL join Arsenal?
The public perception of the two clubs is that Everton are on the rise and Arsenal are freefalling. If that really is the case, it’s a no-brainer for Calvert-Lewin, but there are factors that people don’t consider.
The Gunners are in the middle of a huge rebuild. They just spent the most amount of money in the transfer window and are the youngest side in the Premier League as well. Arteta’s men are not world-beaters, but they are building something with great potential.
Calvert-Lewin, if he does move, could well be the missing piece in the jigsaw for Arsenal. He’ll offer the Gunners exactly what they’re lacking at the moment, and that could well be a game-changer for both parties if this move happens.
However, he will cost a ton of money in January and it’s unlikely Arsenal will be able to afford him, especially after splashing all that cash in the summer.
