‘I would sell him’: Kris Boyd urges Rangers to offload senior star

Kris Boyd has told Sky Sports that Rangers should sell Alfredo Morelos this summer in order to bring in some cash for his services this summer, and spend the money elsewhere.

Morelos, 22, was sensational for Rangers last season, amassing an enormous 30 goals and laying on another 11 assists in 48 league and cup outings. But it was his temperament that caused issues.

The Colombia international picked up 16 yellow cards and five red cards during the 2018-19 campaign, missing crucial Scottish Premiership encounters and the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

Jermain Defoe stepped in towards the end of the season after Morelos was banned for elbowing Celtic skipper Scott Brown and impressed. Former Rangers striker Boyd believes his old club should sell the ex-HJK Helsinki striker.

“If I was Rangers I would sell him because I think that if you can get the money that teams might be willing to pay, you can go and maybe strengthen your squad or your first team with maybe three or four other players,” Boyd said.

“I thought Rangers last season towards the end, finished very strongly with Scott Arfield and Jermain Defoe up front. It looked a totally different team. They looked like a team that were playing together.”

TBR’s view

Boyd could be on to something. Indeed, Defoe replaced Morelos with aplomb and the connection between Arfield and Defoe was certainly better than it was with Morelos playing.

Steven Davis’ form improved then Morelos was suspended, and the Gers put together a run of wins that they had been unable to do with Morelos up front.

Signed for just £1million (BBC), Morelos could bring in an enormous profit for the Gers this summer. Replacing him with an equally as effective, but a cheaper alternative could allow Rangers to add other players with the money left over.
