'I would love it': 22-year-old already says he's hoping he'll be at Rangers next season

On-loan Rangers defender James Sands has said he wants to join on a permanent basis, in an interview with The Athletic.

Sands joined Rangers on an 18-month loan deal from New York City FC in January, but has yet to make a serious impact at Ibrox.

The American defensive midfielder, who can also play as a centre-back, was asked how he would feel if Rangers activated the option to sign him permanently:

“Obviously I would love it. It’s a big club and anybody would be lucky to play here,” Sands said.

“It’s always a little out of your hands as I have to be performing and playing well to earn that opportunity. I’m just going to focus on playing.”

Sands must convince Rangers to make move permanent

Although Sands was used sparingly in the Scottish Premiership last season, only making four appearances, he was brought on during Rangers’ heartbreaking Europa League final defeat to Frankfurt, but wasn’t involved in the penalty shootout.

Rangers have decided to strengthen at centre back this summer, with John Souttar and Ben Davies joining from Hearts and Liverpool respectively.

However, Van Bronckhorst has yet to strength in central midfield, and with Joe Aribo joining Southampton, Sands may be given more opportunities next season, although he may be competing with highly regarded youngster Charlie McCann.

Before thinking about his future at club level, the 22-year-old may have an international reason for wanting more game time.

USA manager Gregg Berhalter has said that Sands needs to playing more for Rangers to have a chance of earning a call-up to the World Cup squad, and adding to his seven senior caps.
