A number of Leeds United fans have been commenting on the report claiming the Whites want to bring Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to Elland Road.
According to The Sun, Leeds have made a new goalkeeper a priority as they gear up for a return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
Martinez, who joined Arsenal’s youth academy in 2010 from Argentinian side Independiente and broke into the first team two years later, has made 35 competitive appearances for the Gunners.
The 27-year-old has excelled in the absence of first-choice Bernd Leno, playing 50 minutes off the bench against Brighton and the full 90 minutes in every Arsenal match since.
“The way he trains every day, behaves and has been behaving since he’s been at the club is phenomenal,” Arteta said of the Argentine, as quoted by The Mirror, earlier this month.
Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho also praised Martinez after the North London derby, during which he made a superb save from a Ben Davies long-range effort.
“What a save. I think an amazing save by Martinez, just a little touch,” the Portuguese was quoted by Football London as saying.
“He’s playing so well to be honest and that amazing save, but fantastic strike.”
The Sun speculates that Martinez may not want to return to bench-warming duties once Leno returns to fitness, and could be tempted by first-team football elsewhere.
Some Leeds fans have welcomed the speculation and wouldn’t mind Martinez coming to Elland Road:
I would be delighted if we got Martinez from Arsenal!
Been outstanding for Arsenal since Leno’s injury and would take some weight off the shoulders off Meslier, give him a full year to develop whilst playing the odd Game still.#lufc

I remember we were linked with him for loan last year but was turned down. He would want 1st team football. Unlikely to move from Arsenal imo

Think Leno has made a quicker recovery than expected. Martinez would be a brilliant signing for Leeds because I agree that he’s as good if not better than leno
