‘I will never know’: Garth Crooks can’t believe what Frank Lampard did with 21-year-old Everton player on Saturday

BBC pundit Garth Crooks can’t believe what Everton boss Frank Lampard did with Anthony Gordon on Saturday.

Crooks picked his latest Premier League team of the week for the BBC and chose Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings, while mentioning Gordon

Lampard opted to play the 21-year-old as a striker in Everton’s 2-1 loss against Villa on Saturday due to the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But Crooks cannot understand why the Toffees boss chose to play the youngster in the position over Salomon Rondon.

What Lampard did with Gordon

“The England centre-back saved Villa three points with a brilliant tackle on Salomon Rondon with the goal at his mercy,” Crooks wrote in his BBC column

“Why Frank Lampard thought he could win this game with Anthony Gordon playing as a false number nine I will never know.

“Rondon caused more problems for Aston Villa in 20 minutes than the rest of the Everton players did in the entire game.”

Gordon enjoyed a real breakthrough season for the Toffees last campaign and became a mainstay in Lampard’s side.

It’s clear the Everton boss has a lot of faith in the youngster and even played him as a striker last week against Chelsea when Rondon was suspended.

Gordon did have the ball in the back of the net in the first-half but the goal was ruled out for offside.

But apart from that moment, Everton lacked any real threat going forward until Rondon was brought on.

There’s no doubting that Gordon is a talented player but for the moment his strengths lie with his direct dribbling and playing in the wide position.

Reports suggest that Chelsea and Newcastle have shown interest in the Everton academy product in recent days.

But Lampard will be hoping to keep hold of Gordon and bolster his striker options further before the window closes.
