‘I wasn’t happy’… £25m Spurs player says he hated last season but is now buzzing

Tottenham Hotspur star Dejan Kulusevski has spoken of how much better he’s feeling at present when compared to last season.

The Spurs ace spoke to football.london about last season’s struggles and how he was determined to turn things around in 2023-24.

Tottenham had a nightmare season last term, finishing eighth in the Premier League table to miss out on European football altogether.

Spurs have since sorted themselves out, making good appointments in the boardroom, in the dugout and in the transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou has revitalised Tottenham, turning them into an exciting and solid team, invigorating the players who were already at N17 and making some top signings too.

‘I feel like the best version of myself’

Although it hasn’t quite been plain sailing – Spurs have lost numerous key players to injury and suspension, for instance – the future is certainly looking a lot brighter.

Kulusevski was one of many Tottenham players who struggled last season, but he says he’s now back to his best and eager to kick on.

“I wasn’t happy with last season and the way it finished so I wanted to come back much stronger this season,” said the £25million man.

“I did a lot of work every day, a lot of hard work, and now I feel like the best version of myself and coming back into my real form.

“I’m just happy because it took many months to get to this point – it didn’t happen overnight – but I’ve worked so hard to get to this level.

“I feel completely free, not only in the new position but in my mind just playing football without overthinking because it’s the best way to play football when you’re not thinking about mistakes or anything else.

“Now I feel very good so I’m ready to keep playing like this for the rest of the season and I’m determined to help the team even more.”

Dejan Kulusevski raring to go for Tottenham

It’s good to hear Kulusevski say he’s in a great place and eager to continue playing well and keeping his standards high for the Spurs cause. Kudos to him for working so hard and getting back the levels we know he can reach.

This attitude will be key as Tottenham seek to bounce back from their recent struggles, keep building and hopefully finish in the Premier League’s top four this season. That would be a great springboard to then make some huge signings next term.

Postecoglou’s Tottenham are still at the beginning of their journey, and as we’ve seen from the other team in North London, it can even take a few seasons to build a world-class squad and clear the deadwood.

It should go without saying, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, and there will be bumps along the way. Postecoglou needs time at Tottenham as he has what it takes to transform Spurs fully.
