‘I was told’: Journalist shares what Spurs insiders keep telling him about Djed Spence

Djed Spence joined Tottenham during the summer transfer window but has had to be patient in waiting for his chance.

Emerson Royal has been the preferred option at right wing-back as Spurs have remained unbeaten in the Premier League thus far.

They lost in the Champions League against Sporting, when Royal was struggling at times in the 2-0 defeat via two late goals.

Spence has had gametime with England Under 21s during the international break and journalist Alasdair Gold has said on YouTube that the Englishman will come good.

Djed Spence backed to come good at Tottenham

He said: “The other thing I was told about Djed Spence is that everything about him was scouted and picked for Conte.

“Not because Conte requested him but because they felt that he was a wing-back that ticked every box for a Conte wing-back.

“Paratici went and watched him a couple of times and said ‘yeah, he’s definitely going to be that player’.

“And I keep getting told this, he’s not the kind of player that Spurs would probably have signed as just a full-back for previous managers, as he’s a wing-back specific player – they feel he fits it so well.

“I can’t help but feel that the moment he gets a chance he’s going to show Conte that.”

Spence is not the first new signing to take time to adjust to his new surroundings so some patience should do the trick.

Tottenham have a lot of games coming up and Spence should get his chance at some point; when he does, it is down to him to take it.

He does not have that Premier League experience behind him, but Conte might have to take a leap of faith on the new boy at some point so he can prove the qualities Gold discusses here.
