‘I was told’: Journalist has been given Spurs transfer update he says will leave some fans ‘annoyed’

Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window, according to Dean Jones.

The Spurs defence has flattered to deceive on numerous occasions over the past few years.

This season has been no different and, while there have been some improvements, there’s still a lot of work to do.

Indeed, Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea saw Gabriel Agbonlahor call for a new defence.

“You look at their defence – five at the back, Doherty, Tanganga, Sanchez, Davies, Emerson Royal – they’re not good enough,” the talkSPORT pundit said last week.

“They’re not good enough defenders to play the likes of Lukaku, Werner, Hudson-Odoi. Just not good enough, plain and simple.

“It doesn’t matter if you get Pep [Guardiola], Sir Alex [Ferguson], anyone could go in there and would not get any more out of these players.

“They’re not good enough. If you’ve got your level, you can’t get any better.”

Admittedly, Cristian Romero has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with Argentina back in November.

However, there’s certainly scope for Tottenham to bolster their defensive ranks further.

But Jones, speaking on The Football Terrace, had bad news for Spurs fans on that front.

“A centre-back is not looking likely,” he said.

“What I was told before the weekend – because they can’t narrow in on exactly who they want right now, it’s not that much of a priority that they want to panic.

“It’s expected they will put that off until the summer now.

“Some Tottenham fans will probably be annoyed by that, but it’s probably sensible if they can’t get the right fit.”

Disappointing but not surprising – TBR View

Conte has worked wonders at Tottenham so far, with Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez putting in plenty of solid displays under him.

And Romero is now “very close to coming back”, according to Conte.

In terms of numbers, Tottenham’s defence is there, even if it could be argued some players lack the necessary quality.

While it’s disappointing to hear Jones claim Spurs probably won’t bring in a new centre-back, it’s not surprising.

It’s hard to bring in new players in January, as clubs don’t want to part with their key players mid-season.

Chances are that the summer window will bring wholesale changes to the defence.
