'I was talking to someone at the club': Charles Watts shares update that will reassure Arsenal fans

Charles Watts has sought to reassure Arsenal fans regarding Eddie Nketiah’s contract situation at the Emirates.

On Friday, the Gunners published their retained list, and Nketiah featured on the list of out-of-contract players.

‘Our thanks and best wishes go out to every player leaving us this month,’ Arsenal wrote on their official Twitter account.

This alarmed some Arsenal fans, but Watts, speaking on his latest YouTube video, said this was ‘just a technicality’.

Since Nketiah’s contract does expire at the end of the month, his name had to be included on that list.

In addition, Nketiah’s name was alongside a note which read ‘contract offered, ongoing discussions’.

And Watts is confident that things are heading in the right direction in terms of the contract negotiations.

“My understanding of the situation when it comes to Eddie Nketiah,” said Watts. “It’s progressing pretty well.

“Just as reported last week or whenever it was, it looked like he was going to sign a new contract.

“I don’t think anything has changed, I still believe that’s the direction things are heading.

“Obviously until it’s signed you can’t say for 100 percent certain that he’s going to stay.

“But even yesterday I was talking to someone at the club and… the signs are that they’re going pretty well.

“And they do think Eddie Nketiah will commit his future to the Arsenal.”

Nketiah hit form at just the right time

As per the Daily Mail, it was believed that Nketiah had already agreed to stay at the Emirates.

The 23-year-old reportedly received an offer of a five-year deal worth in the region of £100,000 per week.

Nketiah has reportedly also been offered a signing on bonus of up to £5million over the course of the deal.

The former England Under-21 international enjoyed a bright end to last season, with Martin Keown deeming him “magnificent”.

Nketiah scored five goals in Arsenal’s last seven Premier League games, keeping Arsenal within touching distance of the top four going into the final day.

For much of the season, Nketiah struggled for game time, but he hit form at just the right time.

Now, a player who seemingly looked bound for a summer departure is now looking likely to pen fresh terms
