‘I was really happy’: £20m Everton player shares what Lampard did after he dropped him last season

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure has spoken to the Athletic about what Frank Lampard did after he dropped him last season

Doucoure signed for the Toffees at the end of the 2020 summer window for a fee of £20 million (BBC) as he made the switch from Watford.

The 29-year-old was initially signed under now Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, but after the Italian left he was replaced by Rafael Benitez.

Now under his third permanent manager since joining the club just two years ago, Doucoure has spoken about what Lampard did after dropping him during the last campaign.

Speaking to the Athletic, Doucoure says that Lampard explained his reasons for dropping him last season and the player is a big fan of his approach.

“Even when you are on the bench or not playing, he explains why you are not playing and what you have to do, so he is very honest,” he said.

“I had one or two games when I was on the bench and I spoke to him and he said, ‘I have done this for this reason’, and I was really happy with that approach.”

The Mali international admitted that he hadn’t played very well before he was dropped and he wasn’t surprised by his boss’ decision.

He added: “I’d played three games on the bounce in one week so I was a bit tired; my performance was not so good, so obviously he changed, and the team won.

“It was against Manchester United and the team won so (that same team then) started the next game. For me, it was a moment to be on the bench. I was not surprised. After that, he picked me against Liverpool and was happy with my performance, so I regained my place.”

Doucoure made 30 appearances for Everton in the Premier League last season, scoring two goals and providing four assists. Only one of them came as a substitute, so the midfielder didn’t find himself benched too often.

Even so, the Blues midfielder is clearly impressed by Lampard’s direct approach and judging by how the squad rallied under him to avoid relegation last season, the Englishman is clearly a popular figure at Goodison Park.
