Aaron Lennon was a true cult hero at Tottenham.
The winger signed for Spurs as a teenager, coming up through the ranks over 10 years at Tottenham.
The fans loved him and he loved the club as well.
Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end, and in 2015, the attacker was sold to Everton for £4m.
Speaking on the Off The Shelf Podcast, Lennon has been discussing his departure from Tottenham all those years ago, and he says that he was gutted to leave Spurs, claiming that even Daniel Levy didn’t want him to leave the club at the time.

Daniel Levy didn’t want to sell Aaron Lennon
Lennon spoke about his departure from Tottenham.
“No I was gutted. I knew it was coming because I wasn’t playing much and I was out of the squad, but it was tough because I felt like I could play in that side. This club was like home then, I’d been at Leeds, but this became home. It was tough, I knew it was coming, but until it happens you don’t realise how hard it hits you, I remember I sat with Daniel and I think he didn’t want me to leave also, but even then we both knew it was right, I wasn’t playing and I needed to play,” Lennon said.
Best thing for him
While it is a bitter pill to swallow to have to leave a club you love so much, this was the best thing for Lennon at this time.
Lennon was only 28 years old when he left Tottenham, he couldn’t be resigned to just rotting on the bench from that point onwards.
His Everton career didn’t perhaps go to plan, but getting regular minutes for the Toffees was better than sitting on the bench for Tottenham.
