In an interview with Estadio Deportivo this week, Erik Lamela opened up about his decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
The Argentine joined Spurs from AS Roma and spent eight long years there. Injuries really troubled him in North London and he never really fulfilled his potential as a result.
With a lot of things changing at Tottenham, Lamela decided he wanted a change as well. An opportunity to join Sevilla came up as Spurs offered him plus cash in a deal that would see Bryan Gil move in the opposite direction.
All parties agreed and the deal was quickly done. Lamela has now had his say about the move and he claims that he didn’t hesitate one bit about leaving Spurs and joining Sevilla.
Lamela: I didn’t hesitate one bit while leaving Tottenham
The attacker said: “Sevilla had an interest in me when I was very young, we played a championship and the final was against Sevilla and that came up.
“I did not hesitate, from the beginning, I was very excited, I felt that I wanted to change of scene, leave England (and Tottenham).
“I (never) doubted because I always liked Sevilla. They have had Argentine players, the teammates spoke to me well about the club, which fought for important things in recent years and that encouraged me to come.”

TBR View:
Whether it was Tottenham who wanted Lamela gone or if it was the Argentine who wanted to leave, the move was the best thing for all parties involved.
Spurs managed to sign a hugely talented young player in Gil. The Spaniard has the potential to become a star in the coming years, and signing him wouldn’t have been easy if Lamela wasn’t included in the deal.
The Argentine, labelled as ‘amazing‘ by Jose Mourinho, needed a change too. He was never going to be a regular at Tottenham this season and that’s not ideal at all for him.
At Sevilla, he is a real star now and he will look back and admit that leaving Spurs was the right thing to do last summer.
