'I want to be at the World Cup': Aston Villa player says he's desperate to go to Qatar with England

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has revealed he’s desperate for a call-up to the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Villa forward Watkins talked about how much he wanted to be a part of an England squad going to a major tournament.

“I want to be at the World Cup, it’s a massive major tournament,” he said.

“I’ve grown up watching England at World Cups, and it would be a proud moment for me and my family.”

Watkins already has seven England caps and two goals to his name, although he missed out on the European Championships last summer.

England captain Harry Kane is likely to lead the line for the Three Lions on his own, but there are spots up for grabs to be his back-up this winter.

England have been short of consistent forwards, aside from Kane, for a while now.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggled with injury last season, and has already been ruled out of this season’s opener against Chelsea with another injury.

Patrick Bamford is another player who will be putting his hat in the ring after coming off the back of a disrupted campaign.

Watkins knows that his club form is the most important thing in the run-up to the tournament, and fancies himself against some of his Villa colleagues: “I’d love to be playing against some teammates, it would be a dream come true.

“Obviously, I’ve got to focus on my club form and perform well.”

Villa have strengthened in several areas this summer, but centre-forward isn’t one of them, with manager Steven Gerrard having plenty of faith in Watkins, Danny Ings and young forward Cameron Archer.

Gerrard has already been full of praise for Watkins in his time at the club, and compared him to one of his former teammates: “He’s a lovely player on the eye with the goals he scores and his technical ability.

“He reminds me in a lot of ways of Fernando Torres. Ollie has that physical presence and build.”
