Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has offered his reaction after Unai Emery was appointed at Villa Park.

Steven Gerrard was sacked after last Thursday’s abject defeat at Fulham, proving unable to turn around the early-season slump.

Caretaker boss Aaron Danks oversaw a stunning 4-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday, with the players seemingly freed up by Gerrard’s sacking.

And Villa have moved quickly to get Emery in, who was managing in the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Agbonlahor on Emery

Agbonlahor is clearly thrilled with the ambition of the appointment and believes Emery can guide Villa into Europe.

The first priority is getting away from relegation danger, with Villa sitting on 12 points, just three ahead of Leeds United in the drop zone.

Villa have once again underlined their ambition to push up the division with a manager who has impressed with Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal in the past.

Emery has of course managed in England before, with Arsenal, when he was tasked with taking over from Arsene Wenger.

That was not an easy task and Emery did not get the chance to see it through, sacked in November 2019 and replaced by Mikel Arteta.

So he has unfinished business in England, which could work in Villa’s favour and Agbonlahor is clearly excited by the incoming Emery.
