'I told him': Reiss Nelson shares what he said to Martin Odegaard right after scoring for Arsenal yesterday

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has now shared with the club’s official website what he said to his captain Martin Odegaard right after scoring yesterday.

The Gunners’ preparations for the return of the Premier League are now in full swing after they beat Italian champions AC Milan 2-1 yesterday.

Odegaard opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a brilliant free-kick as he lifted the ball over the wall and past the Milan goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.

The Rossoneri created some decent openings in the fist-half but were dealt a blow just before half-time as Nelson doubled Arsenal’s lead. Fabio Vieira won the ball back high up the pitch from a Milan goal-kick and set-up the Arsenal attacker.

The 23-year-old’s shot took a deflection and it appeared to come off Odegaard’s foot before hitting the back of the net. But Nelson says he told his captain that he is claiming the goal.

Nelson on Odegaard

Nelson spoke to Arsenal’s official website after the game and shared what he told Odegaard right after scoring.

“I told him (Odegaard), I said listen! I’m joking,” he said.

“I think he got a little toe to it, but it was my goal. It was on target, I’ll take that and I think the scoreboard did, so that’s good.”

The goal would have most likely been awarded to Odegaard in a competitive game but Arsenal even named Nelson as the scorer on their Twitter account.

The Gunners eventually ran out 2-1 winners after Fikayo Tomori grabbed a late consolation goal and Arteta will be happy with his side’s display.

The Englishman will be hoping to impress Arteta during their mid-season tour as he could get an opportunity in the first-team after Jesus’ injury.

Nelson put in an eye-catching display against Nottingham Forest before the World Cup as he replaced Bukayo Saka from the bench. He managed to bag a brace at the Emirates and also provide an assist.

He’s only made two appearances in the Premier League this season but he could now be called upon more frequently in the absence of Jesus.

Arsenal face-off against Juventus on Saturday in what is their last friendly before their return to league action. Nelson will be hoping to get amongst the goals again and stake a claim for a place in Arteta’s side.
