Arsenal legend Paul Merson has waxed lyrical about Thomas Partey amid speculation claiming the Gunners have launched a late move for the 27-year-old.

The Atletico Madrid ace has been linked with Arsenal for a number of months now and is said to be one of the number one targets for Mikel Arteta this summer.

In recent weeks, the Gunners have reportedly also shown interest in Houssem Aouar, while one recent report, in the Daily Star, suggested the Gunners’ interest in Partey has petered out.

However, with Aouar seemingly staying put at Lyon, Arsenal are widely reported to be making a late move to trigger Partey’s £45million release clause.

“I think Thomas Partey is a top draw player,” Merson told Sky Sports (video in article). “I nearly fell off my chair with £45m, I don’t think that’s a lot of money at all for the quality of player.

“One thing he brings as well is discipline. Atletico Madrid are probably one of the most disciplined teams in Europe and he will do that.

“He’s not a midfielder that goes running all over the place, he’s very disciplined and plays in a disciplined team and I think he’ll be a great signing.”

Prior to today, Arsenal had enjoyed a great transfer window, with some shrewd signings plus Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s signature, but a midfield enforcer had continued to elude them.

Indeed, the weekend reports claiming Lyon had pulled the plug on all deals were a blow for the Arsenal fanbase, but now it finally looks as though there is some movement on the Partey front.
