Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson says he knew Luis Diaz would be right for the Reds from the moment he first saw him in training.

The Anfield outfit snapped up the Colombia international in the January transfer window from Porto for an initial £37million.

Diaz, a long-term target for Jurgen Klopp, penned a five-and-a-half year contract at Anfield.

Tottenham had also submitted an offer to sign the 25-year-old, which prompted Liverpool to move quickly for him.

Diaz made his Reds debut in the FA Cup victory over Cardiff last week, getting 32 minutes off the bench.

On Thursday, Klopp handed the winger his full debut, playing 90 minutes in the 2-0 Premier League win over Leicester.

Diaz, who came off in injury time, was bright from the off for Liverpool, making some good runs, pressing, and showing plenty of pace and trickery.

He saw one shot deflected wide in the second half and whipped several dangerous deliveries into the box which could well have produced a goal on the night.

In addition, Diaz immediately formed a dangerous partnership with Robertson down the left, causing Leicester plenty of problems with their interplay.

Robertson, speaking to BT Sport after the game, gave his verdict on his new teammate.

“My Spanish isn’t great but we made it work today,” said the Liverpool left-back, as transcribed by BBC Sport.

“My partnership with Sadio Mane has been great over the last five years so he’ll come back full of confidence after winning AFCON but we have options now. We have competition all over the park.

“In his first training session I saw him flying about and I thought ‘he’ll be OK here!’ For his first start, I thought he was excellent today. I think the crowd really took to him.”
