'I remember': Arsenal defender shares what he heard Gabriel and White saying after he was subbed on last year
Holding has started every Europa League game this season but has not started a Premier League game yet, coming on in four matches.
They have all been one-goal games where Holding has been introduced to help Arsenal get over the line – and they have done that every time.
Holding outlined his role to the Athletic and said that when he slots into the back five, it adds confidence to the team that they will get the win.
Holding on White and Gabriel
“It’s something that came in towards the end of last season,” Holding said of his role as a late substitute to shut games down.
“Obviously we were in a position where we really needed the points. We’d get to 1-0 up and think, ‘Why take any more risks? Let’s try and shut up shop here’.
“You see the Italians do it at all major tournaments — they score and then shut up shop — so why not?
“It’s unusual for a centre-half to come on that much. It’s normal that you’re chasing the game, and bring a striker on to get you back in it. But it’s worked for us quite a few times.
“I remember last season the lads like Gabriel and Ben White were saying that, when I come on and sit between them, they feel like, ‘Oh, we can see this out.’
“There’s a belief within the team that we can win this, we can see it through.“
Holding seems to be a popular member of the group who is getting gametime in Europe and coming on to see out vital wins.
Obviously, he would prefer it if he was starting every game but this is his role in a squad which has soared to the top of the Premier League.
There are two more games before the World Cup, with Arsenal looking to kickstart their EFL Cup run and go into the mid-season break top of the table.
