‘I must tell you’: BBC pundit admits he hates it that Arsenal are top of the league right now

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has admitted that he hates the fact Arsenal are top of the Premier League right now.

The Gunners went above Manchester City on Sunday after an impressive win over Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side were dominant against Jurgen Klopp’s men in the second-half at the Emirates and deservedly ran out 3-2 winners.

Arsenal have now won eight out of their opening nine fixtures and sit one point above City at the top of the table. But Crooks has admitted that he doesn’t like seeing the Gunners do so well.

Crooks hates that Arsenal are top of the league

Writing in his latest column for BBC Sport, Crooks selected Bukayo Saka in his team of the week.

The 21-year-old put in a dazzling display and scored two goals on the day, including a high pressure penalty.

“I said that his penalty miss in the Euros would be the making of this kid,” Crooks wrote.

“Granted, he had already put Arsenal ahead against Liverpool in an extraordinary game between two fabulous teams, but the penalty that won the Gunners the game didn’t even come close to the pressure he experienced from the spot against Italy.

“In fact he will have stayed awake some nights wishing for a similar moment to arise where he could redeem himself.”

But while he was full of praise for Saka, Crooks conceded that he hates seeing the Gunners sitting at the top of the pile right now.

He added: “And boy, when it came, did he relish the moment. Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-2 in a classic encounter to go back to the top of the Premier League, and I must tell you I am not enjoying this one bit.”

Arsenal have been in scintillating form so far this season and their only defeat came at Old Trafford, in a game where they still performed very well.

Arteta’s men have now beaten two top sides in Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in back to back games.

The Gunners had a bad habit last season of going on poor runs of form after losses. But since the loss to Manchester United, they have now won three games on the bounce.
