‘I love him’: Jamie Carragher gushes over West Ham United defender Vladimir Coufal
Jamie Carragher has expressed his ‘love’ for Vladimir Coufal after naming the West Ham United defender in his Team of the Season for Sky Sports.
The Liverpool icon selected Coufal as his top-performing right back in the Premier League this term, as he feels the Czech Republic star epitomises the success David Moyes’ side have enjoyed in clinching a place in the Europa League.
Coufal moved to the London Stadium from Slavia Prague in October for just £5.4million (BBC), which has proven to be one of the bargains of the season as he soon became a fixture of the Irons line-up.
Coufal only sat out one Premier League fixture following his late window arrival, starting 34 of a potential 35 games with Moyes only resting the 28-year-old away to Southampton in December.
Coufal has endlessly impressed with his will to drive up the Hammers’ right-hand channel and chase back, while the 13-cap full-back’s enjoyment in training – even on supposed days off – has left an impression on the club’s staff (Athletic) and teammates who nicknamed him RoboCop.
Carragher has now chimed in with his praise, by selecting Coufal over Manchester City’s Kyle Walker or Joao Cancelo like Gary Neville and Paul Merson, by joining Jamie Redknapp, Alan Smith, Andy Hinchcliffe, Sue Smith and Don Goodman in naming him as their right-back of the season.
“I’ve gone for Vladimir Coufal, I love him,” Carragher noted. “He plays week in, week out, has been brilliant and typifies West Ham’s season.”
Coufal may not follow Declan Rice, Lukasz Fabianski and Marko Arnautovic in being named as the Hammer of the Year, but he has certainly been one of the Premier League’s top-performing right-backs this season and one of West Ham’s most important players.
He has also proven why West Ham were right to back Moyes in signing the Czech star despite being reluctant to do a deal with Slavia Prague at first (Athletic), with only Aaron Cresswell (8) offering more top-flight assists (7) for the Irons this term.
Coufal also ended the season with the second-most chances created by right-backs (39) to Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (75), but with more successful tackles (64) than the Englishman (54), Reece James (44), Cancelo (37) and Walker (27), per WhoScored.
His endless determination to better himself in training and grit to impact games has worked Coufal into the hearts of West Ham’s players and fans, and is rightly earning praise from pundits as well.
