Newcastle United are reportedly interested in appointing Michael Emenalo as the new director of football at St James’ Park.

And Rio Ferdinand believes the Magpies would be making a “very good choice” if they appoint the 56-year-old.

Emenalo is one of several candidates for the role at Newcastle following their highly-awaited takeover.

He made his name at Chelsea, working as the London giants’ sporting director between 2011 and 2017.

During that time as the Blues’ transfer chief, he was responsible for bringing in the likes of Eden Hazard, and also revamped the academy.

Emenalo is currently a free agent, having left Monaco in 2019, and according to Eurosport, he’s confident of landing the Magpies job.

Even before he was being linked to Newcastle, Ian Wright urged the new Magpies owners to consider him for the role.

And Ferdinand, speaking on his YouTube channel FIVE, lauded Emenalo, describing him as a “great guy” and a “real football man” who’d be great for Newcastle.

“I know him personally, great guy, really good guy,” said Ferdinand.

“I had a good few conversations about him on various issues football and non football – real football man, and he knows the game.

“He played that role at other clubs, he understands the game, he understands scouting networks, he understands what you need behind the scenes to have a successful well functioning club.

“He would be a very good choice – I’m sure there’s more people in the mix but he would be a sensible choice for me.”
