Toby Alderweireld has told the London Evening Standard that he knows Daniel Levy was fully behind Tottenham Hotspur during his time there.
Backing for Levy
Levy has been criticised by sections of Tottenham’s fan base for not pushing forward when the club had the chance.
Spurs reached the Champions League final just two years ago, but have gone backwards at an alarming rate since.
Levy’s apparent failure to invest since and subsequent decisions have caused great frustration at Tottenham.
But Alderweireld insists that the Spurs chairman was always someone who was trying his best for the club during his time in North London.
“No, no, I don’t think the club can regret anything. I think they did wonderful,” Alderweireld said.
“You don’t know all the things that happen in a club. It’s not Football Manager. I know for sure that [chairman Daniel] Levy gave 100 per cent for the club.
“It’s good they’re not happy with where they are now. The structure is there to be one of the biggest clubs in the world. Maybe they need some more time. I know in football there’s no time but I don’t think the club should have done anything else.”
Much needed praise
Alderweireld’s words come at a time where Levy has received very little other positive press.
His decision to appoint Nuno is now coming under fierce criticism, after the Portuguese boss’s poor start at Spurs.
Tottenham have lost their last three matches and have scored just four goals in their first six Premier League games.
It is questionable whether Levy will be able to win every Spurs fan around now, even if Tottenham do start competing for the top four again, such is the level of criticism which has been aimed at him in recent times.
But an improvement in their results would at least see the heat over his recent decisions ease slightly.
