Rodrigo Bentancur says he has been doing extra fitness training in order to allow himself to make the best possible impact at Tottenham.

Bentancur came in during the January transfer window, and has already been hailed as ‘amazing‘ by Spurs boss Antonio Conte.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, he has lifted the lid on the work he has been doing in order to hit the ground running.

“No sooner had I arrived I just thought that I need to make an impact. I enlisted the help of Daniel, my fitness coach, who I managed to bring over here as well. I knew I would have to be prepared as the English game is so intense and so quick, so end-to-end,” he said.

“I needed to prepare on a number of levels, with my lungs and fitness for the speed of the game. Professional footballers have a lot of spare time, so that’s where ‘my uncle’ Daniel comes in,” says Bentancur.

“By spending your spare time doing extra work and fitness work, it’s a positive. Ever since I have arrived I have seen that mentality that Antonio has. That’s something that I really appreciate and I really like as well.

“He is the sort of coach who is very intense with everything and he wants his players to always give the maximum with everything, 100 per cent all the time.”

Conte is a demanding coach, and those are the standards he is trying to bring to Tottenham during the course of his reign.

If the players respond, Spurs can really kick on and there were signs of that before the disappointing 1-0 home loss to Brighton last time out.

Bentancur will hope to be a big part of Tottenham’s improvement under Conte and he is certainly going about it in the right way. Now the aim is Champions League qualification, with the pressure on in every single game.
