Darwin Nunez was the hero for Liverpool this afternoon as the Reds picked up a huge three points in dramatic fashion at Nottingham Forest.

Nunez rose highest to nod home Alexis Mac Allister’s cross and send both the away end and the Liverpool bench into absolute bedlam in the 99th minute.

For Liverpool, it felt like one of those defining moments in a season where a win from nowhere suddenly feels enormous.

Of course, the goal was made by a superb piece of composed play from midfielder Mac Allister. And speaking after the game, the Argentinian revealed just what was going through his head when he had the ball.

“This is such a special day for us. To win it like that is not easy. We came to a tough place. In that moment I knew it was last minute and I just had to put it in. Darwin is such an important player for us. There is no easy game in the Premier League. Very happy, very happy. It’s three points. We move onto Thursday. We were always positive. Our leaders were keeping the team very positive. We’re a good group, nice players on and off the pitch,” Mac Allister said (quotes relayed by the BBC)

Big players bring big moments for Liverpool at Nottingham Forest

Sometimes you need your top players to step up when it matters and both Alexis Mac Allister and Darwin Nunez did that today for the Reds.

Another player might have got the cross wrong or under or over hit it. But not Mac Allister. This is a player who has played in and won a World Cup final, the highest pressure situation in football there is.

And it showed today, as he kept his composure brilliantly to set up Nunez, who finished with aplomb.

This was a massive day for Liverpool and one they’ve just managed to get over the line in. At the end of the season, this could well be a result that’s looked back on as a huge turning point.
