'I heard': Ian Wright shares what he's been told Arsenal players did when they saw Man City lost on Saturday

Ian Wright has shared how he has heard the Arsenal squad reacted to Manchester City’s shock defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

Most would have expected Pep Guardiola’s side to take the chance to go ahead of Arsenal in their final game before the World Cup.

That would have put the pressure on Arsenal to get a result at Wolves in the evening kick-off, but instead they went into that game with the chance to go five points clear at the top of the table.

They did exactly that, winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from captain Martin Odegaard to break down a dogged Wolves side.

Wright on Arsenal reaction to City loss

Wright told the Kelly and Wrighty Show that he has heard Arsenal’s squad were cheering the City defeat on the team bus on the way to Molineux.

He said: “When you see City lose against Brentford, which nobody saw coming, for Arsenal to watch that… I heard they were watching it on the coach and cheering.

“That’s how everybody would have reacted involved with Arsenal.

“Now you have to go there [Wolves] and you can’t lose.

“That is what I was more impressed with than anything else.”

What a psychological boost it is for Arsenal to go into the World Cup five points clear at the top of the table after 14 Premier League games.

That is something for their fans to savour during the tournament in Qatar, but they have to make sure they do not let standards slip when the Premier League resumes rapidly after the final.

That Christmas period is frantic enough as it is, let alone after a World Cup when players could come back with all sorts of reactions based on how their countries did – not to mention fatigue.

If Arsenal come through that period still on top, it would be another box ticked, but for now, they can reflect on a job well done to this point.
