Dharmesh Sheth has said on Sky Sports that West Ham United’s rejected bid for West Bromwich Albion stopper Sam Johnstone was worth £6 million.
Areola and Johnstone
He has also claimed that West Ham are still considering Alphonse Areola as their number one target.
The Hammers want the PSG stopper on a loan deal with a view to making it permanent at the end of the season, with discussions still ongoing.
“They have had a bid rejected which we believe to be around £6 million by West Brom for their keeper, the England keeper, Sam Johnstone,” Sheth said.
“I have been told today that West Ham’s primary target remains the PSG keeper Alphonse Areola.
“Talks are continuing with PSG over a loan with an option to buy and it’s clear that West Ham are in the market for a goalkeeper.”
West Ham are yet to make a signing this summer, which comes as a surprise given the success of their last season.
The Hammers must surely add to their squad to be confident of dealing with their European commitments.

Solid signings
Johnstone was relegated with West Brom last term, but his performances were generally solid, despite being overworked.
Areola also experienced a relegation last term, with Fulham, but the Frenchman also proved that he had Premier League class.
Either of West Ham’s targets would surely be a promising addition to their squad.
David Moyes currently has Lukasz Fabianski, but he is now reaching the twilight of his career, and a long-term replacement needs to be sought after.
