'I feel strong, I feel fit': £20m Newcastle player says he's ready to explode this season

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson says he’s fit and raring to go ahead of the new Premier League season.

The 30-year-old missed 20 top-flight games last term due to a hamstring problem and then a calf injury.

However, Wilson enjoyed an injury-free pre-season, and scored in the 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at St James’ Park.

The £20million man addressed his fitness on the latest episode of The Footballer’s Football Podcast on BBC Sounds.

Wilson said he’s feeling strong, fit and robust ahead of the new campaign, amid “a lot of talk” about his fitness.

He also relished the prospect of new forwards coming in and having to fight for his first-team place.

“One thing I will put straight as well,” began Wilson.

“This season there has probably been more so than ever, a lot of talk about ‘will Callum be fit?’, another striker in for his injury.

“As a player and a pro you never want to be injured.

“It’s just something that unfortunately happens as part of the game, probably as being part of an explosive athlete.

“But this season I feel strong, I feel fit, I feel robust.

“It’s down to me now to prove those doubters wrong and that’s what I thrive off.

“If you’re bringing players in because you think that might happen, so be it, it’s all welcome.

“Any competition is healthy, so I agree with it all and the more the merrier!”

Newcastle get their season under way on Saturday when they host Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park.

What Eddie Howe has said about Callum Wilson fitness

“It’s been a massively important period for Callum,” Howe told Chronicle Live after the Athletic friendly.

“I think the few games at the back end of last season did him the world of good.

“But this body of work will hopefully give him a great platform to be robust and withstand the rigours of Premier League football.

“Hopefully, it will also give him the sharpness that he needs to be able to score goals at the very highest level.

“He took his goal very well today, and that will have done him the world of good.”
