'I don't think Pep is being entirely honest': Sky pundit makes claim about Manchester City boss
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is not “being entirely honest” about the prospect of making big-money signings this year, according to Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness.
The Scotland legend has made the bold claim amid reports suggesting that Harry Kane is looking to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
In April, the Citizens manager played down the prospect of pushing the boat out for a new striker despite Sergio Aguero preparing to leave the Etihad Stadium.
“Listen, with these prices, we are not going to buy any striker,” Guardiola told the City media team.
“It’s impossible. We will not afford it. That is not going to happen. All the clubs struggle financially. We are not an exception.”
Fast-forward a few weeks and Kane’s future at Spurs is now the subject of intense speculation, with the likes of Sky Sports reporting that he’s asked to leave the club this summer.
And Souness believes that Guardiola could be bluffing with regards to signing a high-profile replacement for Aguero.
“There are two prizes out there: Haaland and Kane,” he said on Sky Sports.
“With Haaland, there is still a question mark, but that is getting smaller with every week. With Harry, there are no question marks.
“But I think for Harry Kane, it is this year or never.
“For Spurs to become what Harry would want isn’t going to happen during his career. It’s not going to happen during his time at the football club. He hasn’t got six, seven years to wait.
“I don’t think that [£200m] would be outrageous. I don’t think Pep is being entirely honest when he says they won’t go big this year. I think they will.”
Monday’s reports claiming Kane wants to leave Spurs could be the first of many this summer, a transfer saga involving the best striker in world football.
It’s no surprise that City are linked with him, given their current attacking talisman – Aguero – is leaving in the summer, so what better way to replace one world-class striker than with another?
