James Maddison has proved to be one of the signings of the season at Tottenham.
We’ve not seen him play for a while due to an injury issue, but it’s worth remembering that he was genuinely one of the best players in the Premier League before he went down against Chelsea.
Maddison made himself Spurs’ talisman almost immediately after he arrived, and that £40m fee already looks like a massive bargain.
Speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast, Lianne Sanderson has been full of praise for Maddison and the decision to sign him, claiming that she simply doesn’t understand why Manchester United didn’t go and get him this summer.

Why didn’t United sign Maddison?
Sanderson shared her verdict on the Spurs star.
“Maddison, what a signing and I wanted Maddison at Man United, when I said I wanted Maddison when I was on talkSPORT people said he’s not a United type of player, what are people talking about? He can actually perform, turn and do things, I don’t know why United wouldn’t be going for players like that instead we’re spending £70m on Hojlund, £80m on Antony and £80m for Sancho, players who aren’t proven in the Premier League,” Sanderson said.
Where would he have played?
Maddison would make almost any team in the Premier League better, but we have to disagree with this idea that United should’ve been on this one.
Yes, he’s a fantastic player, but so is Bruno Fernandes, and with both players occupying the same position, there probably wouldn’t have been space in this United team for Maddison.
Maddison can play deeper, but he’s nowhere near as effective, and he can also play out on the left, but, Marcus Rashford’s spot down that flank was as safe as it could be heading into this season.
Hindsight is 20/20 and Maddison has probably outperformed all of United’s players so far this season despite not playing since November, but at the time, Maddison wasn’t necessarily a signing that made sense for the Red Devils.
