'I don’t care’: Callum Wilson now makes claim about Trent Alexander-Arnold after what’s happened to Liverpool man this week

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has now made a claim about Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold after what’s happened to the player this week.

Alexander-Arnold was called up to the England squad last week for the Nations League fixtures against Germany and Italy.

Gareth Southgate opted to play Chelsea man Reece James in both games, while utilising Kyle Walker as a right-sided centre-back.

Kieran Trippier made the bench for both games but Alexander-Arnold was omitted from the squad for the clash against Germany on Monday night

And now Wilson has claimed he ‘couldn’t care’ about the Liverpool man’s apparent defensive weaknesses due to his attacking output.

Wilson now makes Trent claim

Speaking on the Footballer’s Podcast, Wilson discussed England’s right-back options with host Rickie Haywood-Williams

The host said that he loves Trent but his defensive capabilities are coming to the forefront after recent displays, but did heap praise on him for his attacking qualities.

And Wilson made the case that the Liverpool full-back will not have to do a lot of defending while playing for England.

He said: “Do you not think though, that in an England team or a Liverpool team that are possession based and have a lot of the ball, you would play Trent because of his attacking capabilities?

“So there’s probably not going to be much defending to be had. If you’re talking about a team in the bottom half of the Premier League or a lower international team, then you might have a valid point.

“But I just feel England is blessed with unbelievable right-backs. We have so many talented right-backs.

“It’s a difficult job and the manager’s probably trying to get a few of them into the team at one time but there’s so many good right-backs that it’s difficult for the manager to choose that many.”

Haywood-Williams added that Trent has ‘redefined’ the right-back role for Liverpool due to his passing and crossing abilities. But he doesn’t think Southgate is convinced by the 23-year-old’s defensive capabilities.

But Wilson said he would not care about Alexander-Arnold’s defending due to the amount of chances he creates for strikers.

“For me as a striker, I couldn’t care if a right-back as good as him going forward couldn’t defend or not,” he added.

“If he’s putting assists and crosses in the box like that, I don’t care. You can let two goals in, but he’s going to set up three or four at the other end.

“Do you know what I mean? For me, that’s goals. I’m going off who can attack the best, I don’t care who defends. But that’s me being an attack-minded coach.”

TBR’s View: Trent should go to the World Cup

Alexander-Arnold’s place in Southgate’s World Cup squad seems to be in doubt at the moment as he is seemingly bottom of the pile in terms of the right-back options.

The Liverpool star has been the most productive full-back in the Premier League over the past few seasons but Southgate clearly has doubts over the player.

But in our view, Southgate should bring Alexander-Arnold to the World Cup as he offers something completely different to England’s other right-back options.

The Liverpool man is capable of unlocking defences and England may need his qualities in certain games in Qatar.
