'I do like him': Michael Owen hails 21-year-old Leeds ace
Michael Owen has praised Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier in wake of the Whites‘ latest Premier League defeat.
Marcelo Bielsa’s charges hosted Liverpool at Elland Road on Sunday, but fell to a 3-0 loss.
Leeds shipped goals to Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane, and finished the game with ten men after Pascal Struijk’s sending-off for his challenge on Harvey Elliott.
Despite the heavy defeat, Meslier put in a good performance, making a number of smart stops and keeping Leeds in the game.
Analysing the game on Optus Sport, Owen singled the 21-year-old out for praise, though he did criticise the Leeds defence.
“I’m never convinced by their defence,” Owen said.
“I like the goalkeeper, he’s young, he’ll make mistakes, but I do like him.
“They’ll always leave you exposed.
“I almost bring Bamford down a peg or two because that team plays to his strengths, they play going forward.
“I almost think you need to upgrade their defence because they are left so isolated.
“You can look at lots of different teams in the Premier League and have that exact same view.”
Meslier has made a big name for himself since arriving at Elland Road from French club Lorient in 2019.
The 21-year-old initially joined the Whites on loan before signing permanently last summer for a reported £5million.
To date, Meslier has clocked up 51 competitive appearances for the Whites.
Leeds have yet to win in the league this season, with two draws and two defeats under their belt.
Up next for Bielsa’s side is Newcastle away on Friday night.
