Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has criticised the Reds’ decision to play a short corner in the closing stages of their Premier League defeat on Monday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s charges saw their 12-game unbeaten run in the league come to an end at Southampton, who ran out 1-0 winners over the reigning champions.
Former Liverpool striker Danny Ings came back to haunt his old club with a superb lob over Alisson Becker in the second minute of the game, the visitors unable to conjure up a response.

The Reds registered just one shot on target en route to a second defeat of the league season, while Saints ended their four-game winless run to climb to sixth and to within four points of top spot.
Liverpool had an opportunity to conjure up a chance with a corner deep into injury time, but it was played short and came to nothing as the whistle eventually blew.
And Carragher could scarcely believe what he was seeing right at the end.
“Liverpool were fantastic in the first 15 minutes of the second half but you would expect Southampton to be hanging on at the end and they weren’t,” he told Sky Sports.
“I could not believe what Liverpool did with their late corner, with 10 seconds left it had to go in the box, but they played it short. It was unbelievable.”
TBR View:
Even though Liverpool weren’t exactly successful with several long balls over the course of the game, the decision to play a short corner when the ref’s about to blow his whistle was truly baffling.
The Reds didn’t have much height to get on the end of crosses, but it would have definitely been better than what ended up happening – taken short, passed back, whistle blown, game over.
Since the 7-0 win over Crystal Palace, Liverpool have produced just seven attempts on target in their last three games – they really need to go back to basics in the final third.
