'I can't lie': 20-year-old Liverpool midfielder admits he was 'disappointed' with decision Klopp made in pre-season

Liverpool academy graduate Jake Cain has admitted he was disappointed not to be included on the club’s pre-season tour.

In an honest interview with Goal, Cain said that he thought he had done enough on loan with Newport County last term to earn a shot at impressing this summer.

While the senior squad went off to the Far East on tour, Cain stayed behind on Merseyside, training and playing with Barry Lewtas’ U21 side.

And he has said that was a huge disappointment as he had hoped to get a chance to show Jurgen Klopp what he can do.

Jake Cain disappointed not to go on pre-season tour with Liverpool

“I can’t lie, I was disappointed,” he said.

“I thought I had a good loan, I did what was asked of me, and I thought I could come back and show the first team what I can do.

“They’re the best team in Europe, so I know it’s going to be very difficult to push for a place in the team, but I thought I might have been able to go on the tour, show what I can do and see what the first-team coaches said.

“So, yeah, it was disappointing.”

Cain said elsewhere in the interview that he wants to depart Anfield on another loan deal before the end of the transfer window.

Last summer, Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders praised Cain for his efforts in pre-season training, saying he “scored seven goals, including some worldies.”

According to the Echo, regular observers say his running power and is something to behold, and he will hope to show that out on loan this term.
