Wojciech Szczesny has made a prediction about Arsenal under Mikel Arteta after admitting that he was disappointed to see the Gunners miss out on Champions League football.

The Gunners were in the driving seat to finish in the top four. Even after they got hammered at Tottenham, all Arteta’s side had to do was win their final two games, but a terrible display at Newcastle cost them.

Arsenal received a fair bit of criticism for blowing their opportunity to return to the Champions League. It was their best chance in years, but just getting that close with their young squad was an incredible achievement on its own.

Szczesny, who regularly helped Arsenal qualify for the Champions League during his time at the Emirates, said he was disappointed with the way the season ended, but predicted that the Gunners will return to Europe’s elite competition in a couple of years.

The Pole, who is currently at Juventus, said, as quoted by The Mirror: “As a fan, it was really disappointing.

“They gave it a good go and nobody would have said before the season started that they had a chance.

“They were still in it with two games of the season left. It’s disappointing but they have actually done a good job this year.

“I can see Mikel’s idea of football, he has a young team so they will be all right. Another couple of years and they will be back in the Champions League.”

Szczesny is absolutely right.

Nobody really expected Arsenal to be anywhere near the top four when they were stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table after the first three games of the season.

Mikel Arteta deserves immense credit for turning things around, and although things went against the Gunners in the last two weeks of the season, they should be proud of what they managed to achieve with the youngest squad in the division.

Szczesny feels Arsenal will be back in the Champions League in a couple of years, which would still be a good achievement, but Arteta, the players and fans will be hoping they can right this season’s wrongs and get over the line as early as next year.
