‘I can cause problems’: Sunderland could have ‘attacking threat’ at their disposal next season

Sunderland prodigy Bali Mumba has spoken of how he is thriving in a wide attacking role in his loan spell away from the Stadium of Light, in conversation with the Sunderland Echo.

The Black Cats youngster is highly rated at the Stadium of Light and has already made 10 first-team appearances for Sunderland, according to Transfermarkt.

However, Mumba has played only once for the senior side this season, in the EFL Trophy, and game time continued to elude him for much of the campaign.

As a result, the Sunderland hierarchy sanctioned a loan switch to Northern Premier League side South Shields for the rest of the season.

Mumba scored the winner on his debut, helping South Shields to a 1-0 win away at Nantwich, before netting again in the thrilling 5-3 win over FC United of Manchester.

At Sunderland, Mumba often found himself at full-back but South Shields have been deploying him on the wing.

“The manager is using me as an attacking threat, playing me more in the wide areas and the midfield. He just sees me as someone who can be a dangerous player,” Mumba told the Sunderland Echo. “With my attacking ability I can cause problems and get some goals that lead to wins.

“I’ll be going back to Sunderland with that experience of playing attacking football. I’ve been playing full-back at Sunderland and that will help me [in that position]. As a full-back now, you need to have that attacking ability.”

Sunderland’s decision to send Mumba out on loan caused a stir amongst sections of the Black Cats fanbase, who believed he should have been given more game time at the Stadium of Light.

However, he is now showcasing his potential on loan, thriving in a new position, and once he’s back on Wearside next season, Phil Parkinson could potentially have a dangerous attacking player at his disposal.
