'I am pleased': Luke Ayling raves about Leeds player, says he's absolutely 'outstanding'

Leeds United defender Luke Ayling has praised Whites teammate Kalvin Phillips for how well he’s doing with England at Euro 2020.

The Leeds academy graduate has enjoyed a superb tournament, playing a crucial role for the Three Lions en route to the final.

Phillips only made his England debut last September but has quickly become a key player for Gareth Southgate.

And Ayling, back for pre-season with Leeds, couldn’t contain his pride at seeing Phillips making history for their country.

“I think every Leeds fan knew how well Kalvin would do this summer,” Ayling told the club website.

“I am pleased he’s shown the country and the whole world how good he is, because he has been outstanding.

“There isn’t a nicer person it could have happened to, so the boys are all buzzing for him.

“We’ve been watching every game, I text him every day to see how he’s getting on.

“I am just over the moon for him.”

Leeds hometown hero’s rise

Phillips came through the ranks at Elland Road and debuted in 2014 under Neil Redfearn.

He spent his formative years in the Leeds first team as a central midfielder.

However, Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road in the summer of 2018 saw him pushed further back.

Phillips has since prospered to the extent that the Leeds faithful have nicknamed him the “Yorkshire Pirlo”.

His efforts not only helped Leeds get into the Premier League but also enjoy a wonderful first season back.

Making England’s Euro 2020 squad is just reward for his heroics, and now he’s on the brink of glory for his country too.
