Hugo Lloris names three other ‘leaders’ in Tottenham squad

Hugo Lloris has told Tottenham Hotspur’s Twitch channel that he is not the only player who would speak up in the dressing room ahead of games, naming three others who are particularly vocal.

Lloris has been the permanent Tottenham captain for the last seven years. And of course, he has now made 400 appearances for the club in all competitions, bringing up that landmark in the weekend win over Manchester City.

Obviously, Lloris is coming towards the end of his career at the highest level. And while he remains one of the best in the Premier League, thoughts amongst the Spurs fans may be turning to who will take the armband when the Frenchman does move on.

Harry Kane is surely the leading contender. He is the England captain. And he has been their talisman for a number of years.

So it is no surprise that Lloris named Kane as one of the players who will speak up before Tottenham games. He went on to name two others who step up in the dressing room.

“It’s not only my responsibility,” he told Tottenham’s Twitch channel when asked about his role in speaking to the team before fixtures. “There’s also important players in the changing room, some leaders, like Harry, like Pierre [-Emile Hojbjerg], like Eric Dier, who are quite vocal.

“That’s good, because we share this experience together. And then obviously, there is the manager and the coaching staff.”

Tottenham building impressive spine as Lloris opens up on dressing room ‘leaders’

The three names Lloris mentions are interesting. In truth, none will come as a huge surprise to the Tottenham fans. Both Kane and Dier have captained their country. And Hojbjerg was Southampton skipper for some time before his move.

But it is encouraging when Lloris spells it out as he has. That is because the four players make up the spine of the Spurs side, with a defender, midfielder and striker all mentioned.

Having that leadership group permeate the team could be hugely significant. It often seems the case that having more leaders within a squad only helps a side realise its full potential.

Tottenham have some very good foundations in place. And they appear to be being put in place across the squad.
