Mauricio Pochettino has a selection dilemma with Hugo Lloris likely to miss the remainder of 2019.

Lloris suffered a dislocated elbow when he fell to gift Brighton the lead last Saturday. The Tottenham Hotspur club captain is out until 2020, leaving Paulo Gazzaniga with the first-team duties.

Michel Vorm departed on a free transfer in the summer so Tottenham’s youngsters are scrapping for the third-choice goalkeeper spot. There is a vacancy on the bench and Alfie Whiteman could be the man to take that role.

Boyhood Spurs fan Whiteman has sat on the bench for the senior side before but he is yet to make his debut. Lloris’ injury is unfortunate but it could push Whiteman one step closer to achieving his dream of playing for Tottenham.

With a heavy build-up of fixtures before Christmas, there could even be some game time for Whiteman. He will be targeting that bench spot and tonight could be his golden opportunity.

Colchester clash crucial

Tonight, Tottenham’s U21 team travel to Colchester United in the EFL Trophy. It is the same scene where Tottenham crashed out of the EFL Cup last month with an embarrassing defeat on penalties against the League Two outfit.

Whiteman is in pole position to start between the sticks against the U’s. Pochettino will surely be interested in what goes on in Essex tonight as Whiteman tries to stake a claim to win a promotion.

Whiteman is not the only Tottenham goalkeeper gunning for the spot on the bench. Brandon Austin is currently away with England U21s and he will be hoping that he is next in line.

The 20-year-old could feature against Slovenia on Friday and Austria on Tuesday. Whiteman and Austin tend to share the academy goalkeeper duties with Jonathan de Bie also in contention.
