There were plenty of positives to take away from Leeds United under-23s win against Bolton Wanderers yesterday. Robbie Gotts, who just committed his long-term future to the club, was on the scoresheet. Gaetano Berardi, Stuart Dallas and Izzy Brown all featured, as they continue to improve their match sharpness.
However, the 2-0 win was dominated by the display of one unexpected player.
Hugo Diaz was absolutely immense for Carlos Corberan’s side.
The 22-year-old Spaniard was playing in a back three and thrived at being given the opportunity to step out from defence.
He, incredibly, assisted both goals with raking passes from the heart of defence.
This sort of performance must surely put the forgotten Victor Orta recruit back in Marcelo Bielsa’s spotlight. He made his debut for the club in April last year amid a centre-back injury crisis. However, when in a similar position this term, Bielsa instead called upon Aapo Halme.
Also capable in holding midfield, Leeds fans might be wondering if Diaz will be in the first-team fold before the end of the season as they continue to operate with a bare minimum squad. If he continues to play like this, Bielsa will simply have to give him a chance.
