Leeds United made a somewhat surprising decision to release Under-23 captain Hugo Diaz earlier this summer and that move now looks set to backfire, with the ball-playing ace joining La Liga side Getafe.
Diaz, 22, confirmed his Leeds exit on Twitter earlier this summer, which sparked mass criticism from Leeds supporters at the club’s decision to let the Spaniard go – especially with Marcelo Bielsa looking for a centre-back.
The former Deportivo La Coruna star was crucial in Leeds Under-23’s Professional Development League North success, playing alongside Aapo Halme and Pascal Struijk at centre-back.
A ball-playing defender, Diaz was also used in midfield. But Leeds opted to get rid and he has since joined La Liga side Getafe as confirmed on Twitter. Getafe finished fifth in La Liga last season, qualifying for the Europa League.
The Tweet is translated as: “New stage at Getafe CF. I face this challenge with great enthusiasm. Thank you for the trust and I hope to return it on the field with work and effort. #VamosGeta.”

TBR’s view – Leeds must be kicking themselves at Diaz exit
It is mindblowing. Following Pontus Jansson’s move to Brentford, Leeds are said to be on the lookout for a central defender that is comfortable on the ball and can play out from the back.
But they had one all along that had spent a whole season under Carlos Corberan. He knew what it meant to play for Leeds, and he knew Bielsa’s system. It is baffling to have seen Leeds offload him.
Now, it is even more bewildering when a side that finished fifth in La Liga last season and will participate in the Europa League next time around are willing to take a chance on Diaz. Leeds fans will surely be perplexed.
