This summer will surely see Leeds United trying their best to improve the squad ahead of what will hopefully be a more sustained assault on the promotion places. Plenty of names have already been linked with a potential move to Elland Road. However, the one that has Leeds fans most excited is that of Swansea City defender Kyle Bartley.
The reason why is simple. Leeds fans know exactly how important Bartley can be. He spent the 2016-17 season at Elland Road, under the tutelage of his former Swans boss Garry Monk. He formed a brilliant central defensive partnership with Pontus Jansson, which so nearly guided Leeds to a play-off berth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Leeds are extremely interested in signing the Swansea defender this summer. His arrival would be warmly greeted by Leeds fans, but results in the Premier League last night have now surely made his signature harder to obtain.
Huddersfield picked up an unlikely 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. That result sees Leeds’ West Yorkshire rivals confirming their Premier League status for a second season. It also essentially condemns Swansea to play Championship football next season.
Which is bad news for Leeds.
Bartley is currently struggling for first-team football at the Liberty Stadium. The Premier League status of Swansea has seen him have to settle for being a squad player. But with relegation, several Swansea players could move on. Federico Fernandez will no doubt have interest from abroad whilst Alfie Mawson is being tipped with Premier League clubs.
Swansea will know that in Bartley, they have a player with plenty of experience in the Championship that they can rely on next season.
Selling him is just not necessary for Swansea. Bartley could play a key role for the Swans next season as they aim to return to the Premier League immediately.
Leeds should push to bring him back, but this transfer task has surely just got much harder for the Whites.
