Howard Wilkinson lauds Kalvin Phillips; makes David Batty claim
Howard Wilkinson has told the Sunday Mirror (18/7; page 78) that Kalvin Phillips could be compared with David Batty, insisting that the Leeds United star reads the game superbly.
Phillips’s stock has continued to rise over the last year. The 25-year-old took little time to adjust to life in the Premier League with Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
And he followed that season up with an amazing showing at Euro 2020. He, of course, started every game as England went all the way to the final.
Phillips surprised a lot of people this summer. For Leeds fans, it was no shock to see him shine. But his displays somewhat highlighted how much he went under the radar last year at Elland Road.
And Wilkinson suggested that parallels could be drawn between Phillips and one of the midfielders who proved pivotal in taking Leeds to the title 29 years ago.
“Kalvin’s performances at the Euros were outstanding and it seems that he is that kind of generous player who may not at times demonstrate the silky skills as some of his peers,” he told the Sunday Mirror (18/7; page 78).
“When his team loses the ball, he’s the one who recovers it and he reads the game superbly.
“David would be a good comparison to Phillips because of their ability to come up with a solution when you lose the ball,” he added.
Huge praise for Wilkinson to compare Phillips with Leeds legend
Batty is certainly a Leeds United hero. For many, he never received anything like the credit he deserved during his career.
Wilkinson will certainly know just how good he was. So for the former Whites boss to put Phillips in a similar category is huge praise.
Phillips’s challenge is to now step up once again as Leeds look to build on their fantastic first year back in the Premier League.
Based on how he has dealt with everything so far, the smart money would suggest that he is about to have another brilliant year.
