How West Ham’s players rated during their 3-1 win at Southampton

West Ham managed to banish memories of an emphatic defeat to Manchester City last match by humbling Southampton for their first ever victory at St Mary’s. New Saints signing Manolo Gabbiadini initially broke the deadlock but an inspired Andy Carroll equalised just several minutes later.

Before the stroke of half-time, a rare strike from Pedro Obiang meant the Hammers were 2-1 up going into the interval and looking at possibly winning a third away game in their last four attempts. The inevitable became clear when Mark Noble’s cross-come-shot free-kick deflected past a still Fraser Forster.

But who was West Ham’s highest rated player on the day?

Darren Randolph – Besides the goal, the Irishman had barely anything to do in the first half. A fair share of decent saves in the second 45 was reassuring to the Hammers defence. Firmly West Ham’s number one goalkeeper. 7

Jose Fonte – Hasn’t really hit the ground running in a claret and blue shirt. Astray passes and lacklustre positioning for his second game wasn’t received well by either set of fans on his return to St Mary’s. Will hopefully grow in confidence in the future. 5

Winston Reid – Assured and composed in the heart of defence. Lead by example. Wasn’t able to do much to prevent the first goal but stood tall afterwards to make sure the Hammers went home with all three points. 8

Cheikhou Kouyate – Put in a superb shift in an unfamiliar position on his return from AFCON. Surprised to be taken off early given his stand-out performance. Plenty of tackles stifled Southampton’s attackers, namely Boufal, who only got the better of him occasionally. 8

Sofiane Feghouli – A very hit and miss player – today would be considered somewhere in between. Showed intentions to get forward and put plenty of balls into attacking positions but the end product was lacking. Perhaps needs to be pushed forward more to have more of an effect. 6

Mark Noble – After a poor performance against City, it was good to see West Ham’s captain back in form. Showed a strong range of long and short passes and was ever present in defence. Probably didn’t intend for his free-kick to end up in the net, but he’ll be glad to score from somewhere other than the penalty spot. 8

Pedro Obiang – Man of the match. So professional despite his relative youth and inexperience, Obiang ran the show from the centre of the field. Terrific ball to Carroll for the opening goal and surprised the whole stadium with his 25-yard strike just before half-time. His partnership with Noble is vital to the Hammers’ success. 9

Aaron Cresswell – Showed glimpses of his best but is still lacking the confidence of last season. Failed to impress in the attacking third and gave the ball away too many times. Booked for time wasting. 5

Michail Antonio – Was largely absent for a majority of the first half but began to improve gradually. Needed to make more runs through the centre to impose himself more. Not his best game but not his worst either. 6

Andy Carroll – His goal gave West Ham a much-needed morale boost after being caught out early on in the game. Made himself a nuisance to the Southampton defence. Taken off early in the second half. 7

Robert Snodgrass – Like Antonio, wasn’t making a major impact thanks to the work of Bertrand and Cedric in the full back positions. Worked tirelessly to get the ball and provide a creative spark. Not quite Dimitri Payet but certainly has potential. 7

Substitutes:

Manuel Lanzini – Replaced Carroll early in the second half and didn’t have a major impact. Probably feeling the effects of the illness that kept him on the bench. 5

James Collins – Ensured West Ham didn’t concede any further goals and cleared well from a corner. 6

Jonathan Calleri – No rating.
