Joe Hart has joined West Ham United on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City. After spending last season in Italy with Torino, the 30-year-old has been given the opportunity to return to English football. Despite his goalkeeping problems last season, Pep Guardiola hasn’t changed his view on the England international and he was told to find another club for the new campaign.
It is understood that Manchester City will fund part of Hart’s wages during his spell at the London Stadium and the deal includes an option for the Hammers to make the move permanent. The 30-year-old has a contract at City until 2019, but he will be keen to move onto the next chapter of his career.
West Ham are one of the biggest sides outside of the top six and they have ambition to grow as a club. Despite the last 12 months being underwhelming for the goalkeeper, he remains one of the biggest names in English football and it is a coup for the Hammers to bring him to their club.
Last season, Darren Randolph and Adrian both struggled to hold down the number one spot, which is why they have moved for Hart. He is certainly an improvement and they will be hoping that he has a point to prove after being frozen out by Guardiola.
With the World Cup on the horizon, Hart will understand the importance of regular first team football in the Premier League. He will have learned from his exploits in Serie A, but he was out of the spotlight and his England spot has come under threat. This will be one of the most important seasons of his career and he needs to remind the world that he is the best keeper in this country.
Aside from his ability as a goalkeeper, Hart is a leader and a great character to have around the dressing room. West Ham regressed last season and they need players who have played at the highest level to guide them into their new era.
The new stadium became a burden on the club, but their new goalkeeper will thrive under the pressure. He is used to playing in huge stadiums and as a past Premier League winner, he won’t be happy to settle for mediocrity. There will be a desire to push the club forwards and that will benefit the Hammers.
