Shock reports surfaced out of the blue last night that Chelsea forward Diego Costa has been openly told by manager Antonio Conte that he is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge next season.
BBC Sport reports that the 28-year-old was sent a message by the Italian detailing that he doesn’t see him as part of his future plans for the club, leaving an imminent exit from Chelsea looking likely.
Talking after Spain’s friendly with Colombia last night, Costa said:
“I’m a Chelsea player, but they do not want me there. Antonio Conte has told me by message that I do not follow at Chelsea and that’s it. Conte said he did not count on me for next season.
“My relationship with the coach has been bad this season. It’s a shame, I’ve already forwarded the message to Chelsea people to decide. You have to find a team.”
The Spanish forward was an influential figure in Chelsea’s title-winning exploits this past season, scoring 20 times and earning seven assists in 35 Premier League outings, and The Sun now believe that the striker would be willing to return to his former side Atletico Madrid – despite their current transfer ban.
“Being five months without playing? I do not know, it’s complicated, but people know that I love Atletico a lot and that I love to live in Madrid.
“It would be nice to go back, but it’s difficult to be four or five months without playing. It’s a World Cup year and there are many things to think about. I need to play, just that.”
Twitter was certainly divided after the news broke last night, with some Chelsea fans devastated…

Others, however, see it as a green light for to push for a move for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku…
And despite his desire to move back to Atletico, speculation over his next club has already begun…

Whatever way you see it Costa was a man that divided opinion during his time at Chelsea, and whether you loved him or hated him there’s little doubt about the impact that he had on the Blues’ title success.
